Mastering a New Reality: a competitiveness outlook for 2013 and beyond

On May 30th, the 25th anniversary edition of the World Competitiveness Yearbook will be published. This special edition will measure the competitiveness of the 60 most globally integrated economies. Looking back to 1989, it was indeed a different landscape. Half of the world's nations were closed and had state-run economies. The economic development in these countries had been frozen in time. The difference in labor cost between the "West" and the "East" was 20-1, the difference in standard of living 50-1. Transport, communication and logistics were minimal, people could not travel, and transparency was not a word in the vocabulary. The 1989 ranking only measured 32 countries; the others had not yet joined the Global Economy or simply did not exist as independent nations...

Over the last 25 years the opening up of these nations has created a formidable transfer of activities. The name of the game quickly became offshoring, outsourcing, delocalisation, and lower costs. But for some countries it also implied severe balance of trade deficits and a massive transfer of currency reserves. For companies, sharing technology and skills favoured the apparition of new global competitors and new brands. The impact on growth was indeed formidable. But after 25 epic years and a severe recession, can it really last? Or is the world economy running out of steam?

Part of the answer will be in the 25th anniversary edition and personally presented by Stephane Garelli at the AIC Luncheon on June 4th 2013 at the Beau-Rivage, Geneva.
